I like to describe ‘vision’ as a ‘mental Instagram filter for your future.’ The word vision in this sense can be a bit deceiving because most of us think of vision as the ability to ‘see clearly’, however, vision is more like the ability to see with rose-tinted sunglasses –to see beyond the present and picture a better tomorrow.
Manifesting a vision requires an entire kit that comes with the sunglasses. And If vision is the sunglasses, imagination is the GPS, the plan is tarmac, and action is the fast car that gets you there. Everything in-between is called ‘the journey’– the fun part.
At its core, vision is a mental image of what we want to achieve and where we want to go. It helps us make decisions that are in line with our aspirations. However, vision isn’t just a dream, a wish, or a fleeting thought. When it comes to making any vision a reality, it requires a crafted plan that outlines a clear path to achieving a desired future.
So, get your filters out, grab the vision, but quickly imagine a plan to get to the destination in your mind.
The Role of Imagination in Vision
Imagination is a critical component of vision. It is the ability to visualize, conceptualize, and create mental images of things that do not yet exist. If you break it down, imagination is I + magic + happening. –And yes, it is magical. Yet, we all have it, no Hogwarts required.
Without imagination, we would be unable to see beyond our current circumstances and envision a better future. Imagination allows us to explore different possibilities and scenarios, and to come up with creative solutions to complex problems. It enables us to think outside the box and challenge the status quo. Imagination is the fuel that drives innovation and creativity.
When it comes to vision, imagination is what helps us create a mental image of our desired future. We need to be able to see it, feel it, and believe it before we can make it a reality. Imagination is what helps us create a clear and compelling vision that inspires and motivates us to start our engines and take action.
Why do I need a vision?
Having a vision is essential for personal and professional success. It gives us direction and purpose and helps us focus our efforts towards achieving our goals. A vision serves guides us towards our desired future and helps us make decisions that are in line with our aspirations.
A clear and compelling vision can also inspire and motivate others. It provides a sense of direction and purpose for teams and organizations, helping them align their efforts towards a common goal. A vision can bring people together and create a shared sense of purpose and identity.
In other words, vision is powerful. It drives individuals, organizations, and even societies towards innovation, creativity and imagination.
How do I get one of these visions?
Developing a vision requires introspection and self-awareness. It’s important to understand what truly motivates and inspires us, and to identify our core values and beliefs. This self-reflection can help us create a vision that is aligned with our authentic selves, and that resonates with our deepest aspirations.
Once we have a clear understanding of our values, beliefs, and aspirations, we can start to imagine what our desired future looks like. We need to be able to visualize our desired future, to create a mental image of what we want to achieve and where we want to go and imagine each step of the journey with our vision filters on.
Imagination allows us to see beyond our current circumstances and envision a better future. It helps us explore different possibilities and scenarios, and to come up with creative solutions to complex problems. Imagination is the fuel that drives innovation and creativity.
However, having a vision is not enough. We also need to take action towards achieving our goals. A vision without action is just a dream. We need to develop a plan that outlines the specific steps we need to take to achieve our vision, and we need to be willing to put in the effort required to make it a reality.
Developing a vision and taking action towards achieving it requires courage, determination, and perseverance. It requires us to step out of our comfort zone and take risks. It also requires us to be adaptable and flexible, as we may encounter obstacles and setbacks along the way.
In order to stay motivated and inspired, it’s important to regularly review our vision and make any necessary adjustments. Our vision may evolve over time as we grow and learn, and it’s important to ensure that it remains aligned with our authentic selves and deepest aspirations.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of having a vision, and to become so focused on the end result that we forget about the hard work and effort required to make it a reality. However, the reality is that achieving any significant goal requires a lot of effort, time, and dedication.
It’s important to understand that a vision is not a magic wand that will instantly transform our lives. Vision is simply a guide that helps us stay focused on what we want to achieve, and that provides direction and purpose. The real journey begins when we start taking action towards achieving our goals.
Taking action requires courage, determination, and perseverance. You gotta step out of your comfort zone and take a few risks. It also requires us to be adaptable and flexible in order to face the inevitable obstacles and setbacks along the way. However, with each step we take towards our vision, we gain confidence and momentum, and we get closer to making our dreams a reality.
What happens if my action doesn’t work out and I fail?
The journey is the fun bit. A hundred people could have the same vision and each have a completely different journey due to their choices or actions. There are bound to be road bumps, times when the car is out of gas, times when you are flying. Nobody else can take the journey for you, so you may as well get on with it, or look at yourself in the mirror everyday knowing you didn’t try. As uncomfortable as taking action might be, if we fail to take action towards our vision, we may end up feeling frustrated, disappointed, and unfulfilled. We may look back on our lives with regret, wondering what could have been if only we had taken action towards our goals.
If vision is the sunglasses, and …if imagination is the GPS, the plan is tarmac, and action is the fast car that gets you there, then you may need a little ‘perserverence‘ –the oil that keeps you going when the going gets tough. Everything in-between is called ‘the journey’– the fun part.
So, what can we do to ensure that our vision doesn’t remain just a dream?
- Break your vision down into smaller goals: Instead of focusing on the end result, break your vision down into smaller, more manageable goals. This will help you stay motivated and focused, and will give you a sense of progress and accomplishment as you achieve each goal.
- Create a plan: Develop a plan that outlines the specific steps you need to take to achieve your vision. This will help you stay organized and focused, and will give you a roadmap to follow.
- Take action: Don’t wait for the perfect moment or for everything to be just right. Start taking action towards your vision today, even if it’s just a small step. Each step you take will bring you closer to your goal.
- Stay motivated: It’s important to stay motivated and inspired as you work towards your vision. Surround yourself with supportive people, read books and articles that inspire you, and remind yourself of why your vision is important to you.
Without a vision, we are likely to drift aimlessly through life, without a clear sense of purpose or direction. We may make decisions based on short-term gains, rather than long-term goals. We may lack the motivation and inspiration needed to achieve our full potential.
In contrast, having a clear and compelling vision can give us a sense of purpose and direction. It can inspire and motivate us to take action and pursue our goals with passion and determination. A vision can give us the courage to overcome obstacles and setbacks, and to persevere in the face of adversity.
A vision without action is just a dream.
While having a clear and compelling vision is important, it is not enough on its own. Taking action towards our goals requires courage, determination, and perseverance. However, with each milestone we make towards our vision, we get closer to making our dreams a reality. So, get your filters out because vision is a powerful force that helps us move towards a future that is better than today.
