Inclusion Of Deaf & Disabled Communities – Part 2 – Wedo.ai

with returning Guest Liam O’Dell

On December 9, 2021, David interviewed Liam O’Dell, award-winning freelance journalist and campaigner, specializing in deafness, disability and social media. Liam is also a former radio presenter with a background in broadcast journalism, has delivered a TEDx talk, and creates content for his own YouTube channel.

Earlier this year, Liam won the Young Freelancer Award from the Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed for his work on the #WhereIsTheInterpreter campaign, which challenged the UK Government on its failure to provide an in-person sign language interpreter for its Covid-19 press conferences.

Liam talks openly and honestly about his own deafness, autism, dyspraxia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and his asexual identity, including his journey with medical providers and the accompanying benefits and frustrations that he has dealt with.

His degree and career in journalism have provided him with an opportunity to advocate for deaf and disabled people. We also talk about pandemic-related issues, such as mask wearing and how that has impacted deaf people. Liam also reviews theatre productions, and we discuss recently released movies featuring deaf people and how Hollywood and the media in general portrays deafness.
